The wheel, in its infinite wisdom, has graced us with an album that helped usher in the alternative movement in the 1990’s. What will the guys think of this album? How did it eventually sell 1 million copies in the era of “Hair Metal”?

Nothing’s Shocking is the major label debut and follow-up to Jane’s Addiction (their self-titled independent release). Released in 1988, Because of lack of airplay on MTV and modern rock radio, the album only sold 200,000 to 250,000 copies in its first year of release. “Mountain Song” was released as a single; MTV refused to air the song’s music video because of a scene containing full frontal nudity.

Jane Says” was released as a promotional single in 1988, becoming the band’s first chart entry on the Alternative Songs chart, peaking at #6.

By 1998, it had been certified platinum by the RIAA for shipments of one million copies in the United States.
